In our climate almost everything grows. Just to give you and idea from Coconuts to Cocoa/cacao, Soursop, Jackfruit, Babaco, Breadfruit, Passion-fruit, etc. We (Swiss & French couple) started in March 2016 building our Non-Profit Organization with the philosophy of permaculture.

Composting Toilet

Composting Toilet

Toilet with internal composting container
A composting toilet is a simple, watersaving and logical alternative to the water closet we know. No need for a water supply, no sewers and no sewage treatment necessary. For me it's even a very practical way to become a part again in the ecological live-cycle of soil-plant-food-digestion-soil. The instructions provided in the instructables link is for a composting toilet with internal composting container. Another solution would be to construct a simpe box with a hole and a lid with a bucket inside. This you could even use inside a house. The contents would then be disposed of on an external composting heap, always being covered up nicely with other material.

Completely contained composting toilet and leachate processing system
The four Center for Creative Ecology at Kibbutz Lotan composting toilets has provided a no-water sanitary solution for human excreta for upwards of tens of thousands of visitors since 2008. Excreta, poo, urine and toilet paper, drop into off-the-shelf and augmented municipal 120 liter waste bins. Users add a cup of dry organic material (chopped straw, leaves). The toilet seat is a 40 cm diameter plastic culvert pipe which extends below the floor. The bottom of the pipe connects to a flexible plastic shaft which connects to a galvanized steel cover sealing the top of the waste bin. From the cover a flexible ventilation pipe connects to an solar powered inline exhaust fan. The bottom of the bin has a raised, perforated floor. A plastic tap allows leachate extraction. Composting deactivates pathogens and continues for months in a closed bin until volume decreases 60%. Compost is used on trees. Leachate is processed in adjacent constructed wetland and irrigates fruit trees.
Arid lands brackish water farming

Arid lands brackish water farming

Utilizing non potable brackish water for organic farming in desert and drylands climates with no soil
The Southern Arava desert, between the Dead Sea and the Red Sea gulf port cities of Aqaba, Jordan and Eilat, Israel, has on average 15 mm of rain per year. Well water has salt (Sodium) concentration of 600 to 2000 mg/L (WHO/EU drinking water upper limit of Na+ 200 mg/L). Land is either hard packed, rocky alluvium or pure sand. Industrial monoculture growing of a limited variety of vegetables in the region uses drip irrigation and high inputs of liquid industrial fertilizers. The Center for Creative Ecology has been successful with growing a wide variety of inter-cropped vegetables, herbs and fruit trees by creating nutrient rich soil from composting municipal and animal waste. Transplanted seedlings or seeds are planted along water limiting drip irrigation pipes atop rows of composted organic matter which is covered with thick layers of mulch from shredded tree branches. Yields increase yearly as the soil comes to life. New varieties of vegetables are introduced yearly.
